Project Overview
The benefits of exploitation of deep geothermal energy have not yet been revealed in Ukraine. In 2022, the largest state-owned company Ukrgazvydobuvannya (UGV) started implementing a pilot geothermal project in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine, which has the highest thermal field potential. UGV possesses a huge fund of deposits with wells and geological information that can be converted into geothermal deposits.
During the previous explorations in the Solotvyno Basin, the company encountered significant difficulties in considering geological risks, since the quality of old geophysical materials is low, and the tectonic settings of the territory, the quality and extent of aquifers have many uncertainties. In addition, the region is seismically active, which requires additional consideration of the induced seismicity factor.
The main project outcome will be the development and deployment of innovative workflows for rapid, safe, responsibly resourced and environmentally sound technology for Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) energy recovery in Ukraine. The Project will provide an innovative path to speed up geothermal exploration in Transcarpathian and wider regions of Ukraine.
