Publications of historical value

  • The energy flux condition proposed in the 2012 L. Slepyan and M.Brun paper “Driving forces in moving-contact problems of dynamic elasticity: indentation, wedging and free sliding” has, in effect, answered the question set by H.G. Georgiadis and J.R. Barber in "On the super-Rayleigh/subseismic elastodynamic indentation problem" 7 years earlier than the authors expected the progress to be made.
The conclusions to the latter paper read: "The present paper clearly raises many more questions than it solves, but these questions are very pressing and are apparently being neglected by the elasto- dynamic community. We shall have achieved our objective if we succeed in generating sufficient interest in this challenging problem to ensure that some progress will be made in the next 26 years." It was, however, in less than two decades that the question was solved. "
“I shall certainly include a significant section of my proposed book explaining this and giving a prominent place to your results,” wrote Prof. James Barber in personal correspondence with the authors. Prof. Barber holds the title of Jon R. and Beverly S. Holt Professor of Engineering, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanicsat the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Michigan, and is a leading international expert in this research area.
  • The 2015 paper 'On the energy partition in oscillations and waves' by L.Slepyan gives, after 138 years, the 'general treatment' of the energy partition problem set by Lord Rayleigh, as was recently noted by the author. It should be mentioned that it's the first time the problem was generally considered after Lord Rayleigh wrote about it in 1877, even though the topic was repeatedly brought up in the literature since.
